Click <a style=\"pointer-events: none;\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/mediawatch\/transcripts\/s3688053.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> (<a href=\"\/mirror\/Media%20Watch%20News%20gets%20gamed%20(11_02_2013).html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mirror<\/a>) for their article (with video).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"\/mirror\/MediaWatch.webm\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Last week, News Corporation ran a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/national\/voters-say-no-to-reduced-speed-limits-in-wake-of-elderly-driver-report\/story-fndo4bst-1226490764519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a>&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"\/mirror\/SPEED UP%20 Drivers vote to increase speed limits after report recommends limit be lowered%20%20 News.com.au.html\" target=\"_blank\">mirror<\/a>) about the shock results of an online poll that indicated over 90% of the 16,000&nbsp;respondents&nbsp;wanted to see a raise in speed limits, despite the poll being paired with an article asking motorists to slow down in consideration for elderly drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-style-default wp-duotone-unset-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"497\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/pollresult.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80\" title=\"pollresult\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/pollresult.png 497w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/pollresult-223x300.png 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Well, I have some news for you: <strong>Over 15,000 of those votes were mine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><br>And no, I didn&#8217;t cleverly infiltrate their systems and edit the poll by hand. That would have been rather illegal. The fact of the matter is, you can tweak any poll with relative ease without breaking any laws*. Vote once, and you can see the poll results. If you were wondering how much they put in place to stop you from voting again, clear your cookies and you&#8217;ll soon find that it&#8217;s essentially nothing. You could vote all day, but manual labour is for suckers. In the end I called it a draw. The first mentioned two polls which I had deadlocked. I didn&#8217;t notice (and balance) the middle poll until after an article had been written on it. However, at the time <em>this<\/em> article was published, all of the polls were in deadlock:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-duotone-unset-8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"452\" height=\"448\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/prankpollresults.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/prankpollresults.png 452w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/prankpollresults-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/prankpollresults-300x297.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The second article didn&#8217;t only reference the poll, it formed the entire premise of the article. It has since been removed (19\/12\/2012) <a href=\"\/mirror\/Divided Nation%20 Maybe we should call it 'foccer'%20%20 News.com.au.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-duotone-unset-9\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"440\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/foccer.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-97\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/foccer.png 440w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/foccer-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/foccer-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>THEY&#8217;VE MADE CONTACT!<br><\/strong>Today, a colleague emailed one of the authors of one of the articles to ask if they were curious as to why their poll result was deadlocked&#8230; and we actually got a response! This was collectively our fourth attempt at contacting them, and we have again provided all of the details to date. As usual, after spilling the beans, we don&#8217;t get a response. However, two days later, the first Facebook poll appears. This may be a stop-gap measure while they fix their own system, or perhaps they&#8217;ve switched permanently who knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In the meantime, let&#8217;s summarise my work to date with a montage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-duotone-unset-10\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"611\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Montage-611x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101\" title=\"Montage\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Montage-611x1024.png 611w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Montage-179x300.png 179w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Montage.png 858w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 611px) 100vw, 611px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><span style=\"text-align: left;\">It really shows my OCD side, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>UPDATE [19\/12\/2012]: <\/strong>Well, that escalated quickly (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/technology\/comments\/151pur\/i_spent_three_weeks_fixing_polls_on_newscomau\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reddit<\/a> helped). It appears that all references to polls (including the polls themselves) in the aforementioned articles have been removed. The articles which were based entirely on a poll result have been expunged entirely. I&#8217;ve put up mirrors for anyone who wants to see the originals. Still no word from NewsCorp. I&#8217;m just speculating here, but it looks like they&#8217;re sweeping the whole thing under the rug. Looking out my front window, there are no sightings of a party van.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UPDATE [14\/01\/2013]:\u00a0<\/strong>So, I stopped\u00a0gaming\u00a0the polls on news.com.au after they noticed my blog and cleaned up their articles. I&#8217;d assumed that was the end of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-duotone-unset-11\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2013-01-14-article.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"402\" height=\"595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2013-01-14-article.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2013-01-14-article.png 402w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/2013-01-14-article-203x300.png 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I guess they haven&#8217;t learned much. In the meantime, I&#8217;ve expanded my exploit to actively crawl all seven of NewsCorp&#8217;s Australian online publications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-duotone-unset-12\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/poll-montage.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/poll-montage.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/poll-montage.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/poll-montage-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/poll-montage-768x419.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SMH were pretty quick to admit it when a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/technology\/technology-news\/alternative-health-poll-exposes-malaise-20120210-1sg9v.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fairfax<\/a>\u00a0 poll got hacked a year ago. The difference is that that they actually fixed their polling system, and added a disclaimer. \u00a0It seems NewsCorp need a little more of a nudge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know what? I think I&#8217;ll leave this running 24\/7. <s>Here&#8217;s a&nbsp;live view&nbsp;of the polls being deadlocked.<\/s><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your move, NewsCorp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>UPDATE [06\/02\/2013]: <\/strong>Four months after being notified, they appear to have limited the amount this can be exploited. After 10 votes in a short timespan, subsequent votes originating from the same IP address are rejected. While changing your IP address between votes isn&#8217;t an impossible task to automate (using a tor proxy), it&#8217;s still orders of magnitude more difficult to do than the original exploit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong><strong>UPDATE [11\/02\/2013]:<\/strong><\/strong>&nbsp;I must admit, the new changes to NewsCorp&#8217;s polling system made it much harder to break. Instead of three lines of bash, it now takes&nbsp;<em>eight<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full wp-duotone-unset-13\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"695\" height=\"332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/turnbullpoll.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/turnbullpoll.png 695w, https:\/\/www.ubermotive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/turnbullpoll-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 695px) 100vw, 695px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">To be fair, this brings their polling security in line with that of Fairfax, which I broke too.
